The days when intercoms were mere supplements to home security systems are long gone. With the advent of highly advanced home intercom systems and sophisticated variations of the traditional intercom, intercoms are now at the forefront of home security.

Less than a decade ago, intercoms had very limited capabilities. Normally placed beside front doors (door intercoms) or in children’s rooms (baby intercoms), earlier models were used specifically to communicate with visitors and to monitor the younger members of households. Those models often dealt with audio problems, and various complications with their cables and wires.

Later models, however, were far more reliable, and far less problematic. Not only did they boast superior audio quality, they also introduced video capabilities, and did away with the tangles of cables and wires. Among other things, it was the arrival of these innovations on the market that proved that it was almost time for intercom systems to share top status with leading security systems in the home security industry.

And if the widespread availability and use of these intercom systems today are any indication, that time is now.

Having a wireless intercom, a video intercom, or a wireless video intercom is no longer strange, nor an exceptional case. Because of the security and convenience these intercoms offer, they have become more and more common, to the point that it is almost expected that homes with intercom systems feature these sophisticated devices.

What’s more, these intercoms are constantly improving, with no end in sight. Recent inventions like video door phones, which some believe are better suited for home security than CCTV and security cameras, showcase these improvements.

Most telling of the intercom’s elevated status in home security, however, is the emergence of several security companies that specialize in intercom services like intercom installation, replacement, maintenance, repair, and integration. The mere existence of these companies displays how diverse, practical, and valued intercoms have become. And with the services they render, it’s likely intercoms will become even more prominent in the future.
